Obasanjo Slams Buhari For Not Signing Africa Free Trade Deal

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has decried the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Africa Continental Free Trade Area agreement, expressing hope that he will change his mind before it is too late.

Obasanjo poured out his mind on the AfCFTA during a presidential panel, titled: ‘When Leaders Make History’ at the Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on Tuesday. He was joined by the President of Zimbabwe, Emerson Mnangagwa.

Obasanjo said, “That President Buhari didn’t sign the free trade agreement in Kigali is disappointing; I hope he signs it before it is too late.

“Egypt started the discussion on the formation of the Organisation of African Unity but didn’t conclude it and Nigeria took over. Nigeria was also central to the discussion of the free trade agreement, but I am surprised that the country withdrew from signing.”

The AfCFTA treaty is one of the flagship projects of the African Union Agenda 2063, and is aimed at creating a single continental market for goods and services, with free movement of business persons, investments and a single currency.

Also, the agreement commits countries to removing tariffs on 90 per cent of goods and to liberalise services, while items identified as sensitive, which make up the balance 10 per cent, will also be phased out later as tariff-free.

But the President, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Dr. Frank Jacobs, said the government’s enforcement mechanism in the area of enforcement of rules of origin needed to be clearly defined before local producers could support the agreement.

It is believed that the AfCFTA treaty would improve intra-African trade and enhance economic growth and sustainable development.

The Federal Government had delayed the signing of the treaty to allow for more deliberations and input from stakeholders and had set up a committee on the issue before the President would sign the treaty.

Speaking on the need for increased youth and women participation in politics in Africa, Obasanjo, who zeroed in on Nigeria, stated, “In our own part of the world, we have not done enough in this regard. Since independence, we have never had any woman as president and VP; no woman has contested governorship election and won.

“In the coming dispensation, all organs of political parties should have 30 per cent slots for women, 30 per cent for the youth, and 40 per cent for the others.”

He said it was disheartening that the number of the women in the National Assembly was still very insignificant.

Tinubu Absent As Buhari Hosts APC National Caucus Meeting

A national leader of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, was conspicuously absent on Monday as President Muhammadu Buhari played host to a meeting of the national caucus of the party.

The meeting, which began at about 8:20 p.m. is holding inside the new Banquet Hall of the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The caucus meeting is preparatory to a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) which is expected to hold at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, Tuesday.

A similar caucus meeting was held on February 26 where a decision was taken to extend the tenure of both the national and state officials.

At that meeting, Mr Tinubu had reportedly kicked against the idea of tenure extension for the party executives insisting that congresses should hold where new set of leaders should be elected by party faithful.

The NEC, however, jettisoned the stance of the former Lagos State governor, who was earlier appointed by Mr Buhari to head a committee to reconcile feuding groups within the party.

Since that NEC meeting, ‎Mr Tinubu is not known to have made any moves to reconcile warring groups, neither has he selected any committee members to work with on the reconciliation task.

No official reason was, however, given for his absence at Monday’s meeting. Those attending Monday’s caucus meeting include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

Also in attendance were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha, former and serving governors as well as top party stalwarts and officials.

Bill Gates Hits Nigeria Again: “Your Investment In Health, Education Not Good”

Bill Gates, world’s second richest man, says the federal government’s investments in young people, especially in areas of health and education, is not good enough.

He said this in an interview with CNN. The co-chairman of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation reiterated the comments he made when he spoke at the expanded national economic council meeting on Thursday.

At the meeting which was presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Gates had said the execution priorities of the economic recovery and growth plan do not reflect the true needs of Nigerians.

“The Nigerian government’s economic recovery and growth plan identify investing in our people as one of three strategic objectives. But the execution priorities don’t fully reflect people’s needs, prioritising physical capital over human capital,” he had said.

“People without roads, ports, and factories can’t flourish. And roads, ports and factories without skilled workers to build and manage them can’t sustain an economy.”

Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna state, who was at the meeting had defended the federal government, saying Gates’ comment was incorrect.

But in the chat with CNN, the billionaire businessman defended his criticism of the Nigerian government. He said Nigeria would become an engine of growth if the government gets health and education right.

“As a partner in Nigeria, I am saying the current plan is inadequate. Nigeria has all these young people and the current quality and quantity of investment in these young generations; in health and education just isn’t good enough. So, I was very direct,” he told CNN.

“If they can get health and education right, they will be an engine of growth not just for themselves but for all of Africa.”

Anambra community dissolves siblings’ marriage, cleanses land of abomination

The Agba community in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State has severed the purported marriage between two siblings in the area, Chiadiakobi Ezeibekwe and 17-year old Chibuzor Ezeibekwe.

The family, led by their father, Mr Lewis Ezeibekwe were on Saturday cleansed spiritually from the act which was deemed abominable by the community.
The parish priest of St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ekwulobia, Rev Fr. Ignatius Onwuatuegwu of St. Joseph Catholic who officiated the cleansing mass prayed for forgiveness upon the family.

The children, Chiadikobi Ezeibekwe, a 25 years old Maths teacher and her 17 years old sister and student, Chibuzor Ezeibekwe, were cleansed and their marriage dissolved.

In his sermon at the mass which was held in front of Ezeibekwe’s house, Rev Fr. Onwuatuegwu said the gathering was an opportunity to emphasize on the social and spiritual consequence of incest.

He said, “This issue does not concern only the family of Lewis, it concerns the entire Ekwulobia.

Before the church service commenced, the eight members of the Ezeibekwe family knelt down before the traditional ruler, traditional prime minister and elders of the community and apologized to the entire Agba Ekwulobia community.

Chiadikaobi said he had accepted his wrong and asked for forgiveness from the community.

He said, “What we did was wrong and an abomination in our community. I feel pained in my heart. I did not do it because I was hungry for a woman or attracted to my sister, far from it.

“I apologize to everyone. I am very sorry for bringing all of you out here under the sun. Please forgive us. We have gone through the process of annulment and the marriage has been annulled.

His sister, Chibuzo said, “I ask for forgiveness.”

After the cleansing rituals, seven girls said to be virgins, adorning white dresses, used seven palm frond branches to sweep the Ezeibekwe compound.

A Nigerian man identified as Mopmi Samson, who was traveling to Bauchi State from Abuja for his wedding slated to hold on Saturday March 31st, reportedly died in a fatal accident.

Benue Farmers Lost Rice Worth N8BN To Herdsmen Attacks, Commissioner Says

Rice worth over N8bn has been lost to herdsmen attack this year in Benue State. The Commissioner for Agriculture, James Anbua, disclosed this during a press briefing in his office on Saturday

Anbua, who was fielding questions from newsmen on the aftermath of herdsmen attack on food security in the state, noted that Benue is ranked among the fifth largest producers of rice in the country, with the expectation of bumper harvest this year.

Anbua regretted that the herdsmen attack on the state was coming at the time farmers were harvesting their rice, adding that the local government areas with comparative advantage in rice production because of their terrain were Guma and Logo, both of which are greatly affected by the herdsmen attacks.

“Already, there is a threat to food security in Benue State. Agriculture starts from land preparation; by now, farmers in those areas are supposed to have started clearing lands for the next cropping season, but most of these people are in (internally displaced persons’) camps and they have not gone back to start the process,” Anbua said.

Continuing, he said, “Guma and Logo are the high crops processing areas, but since the farmers are not in their ancestral homes, they can’t talk of clearing lands.

“Therefore, the food security is threatened because these people cannot go back to farm and there would not be much farm activities in those areas and there would be shortage of food towards the end of 2018.”

Anbua said the state expected bumper harvest for the 2017 cropping season because Benue State was one of the highest mass producers of rice that year.

However, he said, because most of those rice farms were not harvested, the product was lost and even the
little that was harvested was destroyed.

Anbua lamented that most of the farmers affected in the herdsmen attack took the CBN-Anchor Borrowers’ loan

SHARP GUY! Corps Member Impregnates 11-Year-Old JSS2 Student In Delta

A yet to be identified youth corps member serving in Delta state has been arrested for allegedly defiling an eleven-year-old JSS 2 student in Warri area of Delta state.

It was reported that the corps member was assigned to carry out home lessons for the young girl but he had other plans for the girl which has resulted to an early pregnancy and put the little girl in a bad position.

The Nana College Warri student now goes through the pain of abuse and molestation, the suspect has been arrested and is currently in custody at Division B police station in Warri.

It was also gathered that a notification has been sent to National Youth Service Corps NYSC national secretariat as the suspect is to be charged to court.

A Facebook user, Israel Joe shared the news on the platform, he wrote;

A youth corp member defiled an eleven (11) year old JSS 2 student. Simple instruction to carry out home lessons have ended the little girl with pregnancy.

The Nana College Warri student now goes through the pain of abuse and molestation. While he will be charge to court and a notification has been sent to NYSC national secretariat, we insist that parents must be careful with those they leave with their children. Trust no man.

The suspect is right at the custody of B Division Warri and we are much impress with the non compromising investigations by the working DPO. Again I’m saying trust no man with your female child. Don’t suspect them, don’t trust them. Be street wise…

See The Face Of Police Sergeant Who Led Robbery Squad On Deputy Governor's Guest House (Photo)

The ex Police sergent (with gun) and other suspects

A dismissed sergeant of the Nigeria Police Force attached to Jigawa state police command, Sani Danjuma, has been arrested for leading a robbery squad to attack a guest house in Kano metropolis belonging to the deputy governor of Jigawa state, Barr Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia.

According to reports, the dismissed officer served guard duty in the said guest house while in active service of the force and thus conspired with three others to attack the house carting away a BMW posh car valued at N11m and some undisclosed amounts of cash.

The suspects disarmed the police officer stationed at the guest house.

Spokesperson of the state police command, SP Magaji Musa Majia who paraded the suspects before newsmen, said the guest house was attacked on Sunday, 18th March, at 9:30pm.

"An information through a good samaritan was disclosed to the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) in Kano that armed robbers with dangerous weapons attacked the guest house of the deputy governor of jigawa state located along Okashatu close off Hadejia road where they attacked the policemen on guard duty and confiscated one AK47 rifle with the rifle No: 26594 loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition," he said.

Majia said upon the receipt of the information, the state Police Commissioner, Rabi’u Yusuf immediately ordered the Anti-Robbery Squad to swing into action, which led to the eventual arrest of the suspects.

The arrested suspects have all confessed to the crime and have led detectives to their hideout where the loaded rifle belonging to the police officer and the BMW posh car and other dangerous weapons were recovered.

Onoseta Oribhabor, a 30-year-old Nigerian man has killed himself after murdering his 27-year-old girlfriend, Essozinam "Martine" Assali, in Toronto, Canada.

According to reports, police were called to a condo building in the north end of the city, on March 6, and found Oribhabor dead on a balcony. After a further search, they found a
woman inside a unit with obvious signs of trauma.

She was treated for injuries, but ultimately died. Oribhabor graduated from Babcock University, Ogun State, before leaving for Canada.

Police characterize the case as a murder-suicide and have listed 27-year-old Essozinam Assali as the city’s 10th homicide victim of the year. Police describe the deaths as a domestic incident and say no other suspects are being sought.

OMG Twitter says "Black Panther" is the the most-tweeted about movie of all time with over 35 million tweets

Twitter has issued a statement today saying that "Black Panther" is the the most-tweeted about movie of all time. The film, which stars Chadwick Boseman and is directed by Ryan Coogler, has amassed more than 35 million tweets.

According to the statement, "Black Panther" Twitter chatter was loud enough to topple two other box office hits that held the title from a galaxy far, far away: "Star Wars: The Force
Awakens" and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi."

In January, Kendrick Lamar fired off what is now the most-retweeted "Black Panther" tweet ever when he posted to Twitter the track list to the film's soundtrack, which was curated and produced by the Grammy-winning rapper.

It took only 26 days for "Black Panther" to crack $1 billion at the global box office, and since opening last month the film has been at the top of the box office five weeks in a row. So far the film has made more than $1.1 billion worldwide.

The film also holds a 97% score on review site Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the best-reviewed comic book films in history.
